Hydraulic Cylinder Repairs Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide hydraulic motor repair for all major brands?

Because we handle all cylinder stripping, machining, and testing in-house at our Derrimut workshop, we drastically cut down on wait times compared to companies that outsource their fabrication. Standard repairs and resealing usually take between 24 to 48 hours, depending on the extent of the damage and parts availability. For urgent breakdowns, please call us directly to discuss emergency turnaround options.

During our initial assessment, we measure the wear and tear on your cylinder rod and barrel. If the rod is severely bent or the barrel is cracked beyond safe machining limits, a repair may cost close to the price of a new unit. We always provide a transparent, upfront quote comparing the cost of a repair (or machining a new rod) versus a full replacement, so you can make the best financial choice.

Our fully equipped, modern workshop is located in Derrimut, Melbourne. This central location allows us to efficiently provide hydraulic repairs for commercial and industrial clients across the western suburbs and surrounding Victorian regions. You can drop off your equipment directly at our facility.

You should book an assessment if you notice any of the following warning signs:

  • Visible hydraulic fluid leaks around the gland or seals
  • The cylinder droops or bypasses when holding a heavy load
  • Deep scratches, pitting, or scoring on the chrome cylinder rod
  • Shuddering or jerky movements during extension or retraction

Absolutely. We never return a component without verifying its performance. Every cylinder we rebuild undergoes rigorous pressure testing on our in-house test bench to ensure the unit performs exactly to original OEM specifications and is completely leak-free before it leaves our shop.

Cylinder honing is an abrasive machining process used to smooth out the inside of the cylinder barrel. When dirt enters the hydraulic fluid, it causes internal scratches (scoring). If we simply put new seals into a scratched barrel, they will tear immediately. Our in-house Sunnen Honing Machine removes these scratches, creating a perfect surface that drastically extends the lifespan of your new seals.

Yes. If a cylinder rod is lightly scratched, it can sometimes be polished. However, if it is deeply gouged, pitted by rust, or bent, our machine shop can fabricate a brand-new, high-strength chrome rod in-house to exactly match the original dimensions.

We do not offer mobile field services for cylinder strip-downs. Opening a sensitive hydraulic cylinder in a dusty paddock, building site, or depot guarantees that dirt will enter the system, leading to rapid seal failure. To ensure a guaranteed, factory-standard repair, the component must be removed and brought to our clean, controlled Derrimut workshop.

The most common causes of cylinder failure are fluid contamination and rod damage. To maximise the lifespan of your equipment after a repair, we recommend regularly replacing your system filters, ensuring your wiper seals are intact to block dirt, and avoiding lifting loads that exceed the machine’s rated capacity, which can bend the cylinder rod.
